New Initiative for Road Accident Victims: Cashless Treatment Up to ₹1.5 Lakh!

Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims Launched
New Delhi: Victims of road accidents across India will now have access to cashless medical treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh for the first week at designated hospitals, as announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Tuesday.
The initiative, known as the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025, is effective from May 5, 2025.
This scheme aims to significantly decrease fatalities from road accidents by ensuring timely medical care.
According to the notification, anyone injured in a road accident involving a motor vehicle is eligible for cashless treatment under this scheme.
The National Health Authority (NHA) will oversee the implementation of this program, collaborating with police, hospitals, and state health agencies.
Victims can receive cashless treatment at any designated facility for a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh for up to seven days following the accident.
Treatment at non-designated hospitals will only be for stabilization, as outlined in the guidelines.
The State Road Safety Council will act as the primary agency for executing the scheme within each state or Union Territory, coordinating with the NHA for onboarding hospitals and managing victim treatment and payments.
An 11-member steering committee has been established under the road secretary to oversee the scheme's implementation, including the CEO of the NHA and an additional secretary from MoRTH.
Previously, on March 14, 2024, a pilot program was initiated in Chandigarh and later expanded to six states to facilitate cashless treatment for road accident victims.
Recently, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari reported that there were 480,000 road accidents in 2023, leading to 172,000 fatalities.
