Guwahati, Apr 16: On Thursday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma celebrated the identification of a new gecko species named Cyrtodactylus jayadityai, marking a significant achievement for both the state and the Northeast region.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister emphasized that this discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the area and showcases the advancing skills of researchers dedicated to wildlife science and conservation.

Sarma pointed out that such findings not only enhance scientific understanding but also bolster the argument for ongoing ecological preservation efforts in the region.

“This is a proud moment for Assam and the Northeast. The identification of Cyrtodactylus jayadityai underscores our rich biodiversity and the growing expertise of our researchers,” he stated.

He expressed optimism about the collaboration between conservation initiatives and scientific talent, which has led to such important discoveries.

The Chief Minister stressed the necessity of safeguarding delicate ecosystems, especially in biodiversity-rich areas like Northeast India.

The newly recognized species is part of the Cyrtodactylus genus, commonly referred to as bent-toed geckos, which are prevalent throughout Asia and noted for their ecological variety.

Researchers believe that the identification of Cyrtodactylus jayadityai will enhance the understanding of species evolution and habitat specialization in the region.

Experts have long asserted that Northeast India, with its distinct climatic and geographical features, is one of the country’s most biologically diverse areas, frequently revealing new species across various flora and fauna.

However, they also warn that rising human activities and environmental degradation threaten these vulnerable habitats.

The Chief Minister's comments come at a time when there is a renewed emphasis on conservation strategies and scientific research in Assam, with the state government advocating for increased collaboration among academic institutions, conservationists, and local communities.
