New Delhi Secures Hosting Rights for 2027 Championship

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), which oversees Olympic shooting sports in the nation, has officially announced that New Delhi will host the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship in 2027. This prestigious event will provide eight quota spots for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. The confirmation came via a letter from Duaij AlOtaibi, Secretary General of the Asian Shooting Confederation (ASC), addressed to Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, NRAI President, on Monday.

A Historic Second Hosting

This marks the second consecutive occasion that India will host this elite continental championship for rifle and pistol shooters. Notably, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has also designated New Delhi to hold the ISSF World Cup for Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun in April 2027, where an additional 12 quota places for LA 28 will be available.

Positive Impact on Indian Shooters

Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo expressed optimism about this development, stating, "This will significantly enhance the prospects for Indian shooters as they will have two home events throughout the year to secure quota spots. This is particularly encouraging for our rifle and pistol athletes. I extend my gratitude to Secretary General Eng. AlOtaibi and the ASC team for their continued trust in India's ability to host world-class shooting events."

Acknowledgment of Team Efforts

Pawankumar Singh, Secretary General of NRAI, also shared his insights, stating, "This achievement is a testament to the relentless efforts of our NRAI team, and I congratulate everyone involved in this success. The unwavering support from the Sports Authority of India, the Ministry of Sports, and the Government of India has played a crucial role in establishing India as a preferred venue for international shooting competitions. We aim to further solidify this reputation with the upcoming international tournaments next year."

India's Emergence as a Shooting Sports Hub

India is steadily establishing itself as a prominent center for sport shooting. Following the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Indian shooters secured three medals, the country has regularly hosted top-tier international events at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges. The ISSF World Cup Final is scheduled for October 2024, and the ISSF Junior World Cup for Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun took place last September, with the Asian Championship Rifle/Pistol 2026 currently in progress.
