New Cricket Stadium Inaugurated in Umrangsho to Boost Local Sports
Inauguration of the Assam Cricket Association Stadium
Umrangsho, Dec 5: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, officially opened the new Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium in Umrangsho on Friday. He described this facility as a significant enhancement to the sporting environment in Dima Hasao, aimed at fostering young talent in the region.
During his speech at the inauguration, Sarma highlighted that the area will soon feature both a cricket and a football stadium in close proximity, thereby providing comprehensive sports facilities for the youth.
He stated, “Umrangsho will have both a cricket stadium and a football stadium nearby.”
The Chief Minister noted that the newly opened stadium, surrounded by picturesque hills, is designed to accommodate up to 15,000 spectators, offering a world-class experience.
Sarma also mentioned plans to host a major cricket match next year, featuring prominent Indian players, and announced intentions to install floodlights at the stadium to facilitate night matches.
He elaborated on the broader vision for sports development, indicating that while a synthetic running track cannot be integrated into the cricket stadium due to design limitations, it will be constructed at the forthcoming football stadium. This track will aid local youth in preparing for competitive examinations.
He remarked, “This year, over 100 youths from Dima Hasao secured positions in the Assam Police. With 5,000 new job openings anticipated, they will have the opportunity to train on the new track and field.”
Sarma emphasized the district's potential to produce national-level athletes with adequate support, stating, “Assam is rich in talent. If we provide the right facilities, we could see a player like Virat Kohli emerging from Dima Hasao in the next 5 to 10 years.” He assured that the facilities at the Umrangsho stadium will be continuously improved to nurture aspiring cricketers.
