Bengaluru's New Police Leadership
On Friday, the newly appointed Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, Seemant Kumar, emphasized his commitment to maintaining and enhancing the effective work already accomplished by the police force. In a conversation with a news outlet, Commissioner Kumar stated, “I have just taken charge. Bengaluru is a vast city, and the police have been performing well, so my focus will be on continuing this good work and making improvements. We need some time to engage with the officers.”
Kumar highlighted the city's significant growth in population, area, and crime rates, asserting that fundamental policing remains a top priority. “We are here for the people, and our goal is to ensure the city remains safe. We assure the public that we will strive for the best policing possible through teamwork,” he added. Previously, senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh took over as the new commissioner of Bengaluru City Police.
Following a tragic stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that resulted in 11 fatalities, the state government appointed Singh as the new commissioner after suspending the former commissioner, B. Dayanand. Alongside Dayanand, several other officials, including Additional Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar, Deputy Commissioner (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Police Commissioner Balakrishna, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK, were also suspended with immediate effect. The Karnataka Police have filed a case against various parties involved in the Bengaluru stampede incident, including the Karnataka Cricket Board's administrative committee and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
