Overview of 'Collage'

Guwahati, July 27: 'Collage', an upcoming Assamese film set to premiere on August 1, narrates the intense period of the Assam Agitation. The narrative unfolds from 1977 and wraps up following the contentious elections of 1983.

Historical Context

The backdrop of the film traces back to 1969 when land rights disputes ignited tensions in West Bengal. A group of passionate students, inspired by communist ideals, spearheaded the protests. Tragically, police violence resulted in the deaths of 10 to 12 students from Jadavpur University, which ignited nationwide unrest and the emergence of the Naxal movement. This movement's impact reached Assam, leading many youths to join the cause from around 1972, while law enforcement intensified their crackdown.

The Assam Movement

In Assam's Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency, allegations arose regarding the inclusion of foreign names on the voter rolls. The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and various groups protested for their removal. When the government ignored their demands, the Assam Movement commenced in 1979 under AASU's guidance. Leftist factions opposed the movement, claiming it was infiltrated by communal elements, a charge AASU vehemently denied, leading to ideological confrontations.

Consequences of the Conflict

This ideological clash resulted in tragic violence among the Assamese populace. Many youths lost their lives due to police and military actions, while others fell victim to the agitators. The most affected were women, children, and the elderly, who faced immense suffering amid police brutality, social stigma, and economic instability. The film depicts the harrowing reality where numerous young women took their own lives, while others endured humiliation and violence, living in a state of despair. 'Collage' captures this environment of distrust and division, while also highlighting the glimmers of hope for a brighter future amidst the turmoil.
