Introduction of the FASTag Annual Pass

For those frequently traveling on national highways, there's promising news. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday that the government will introduce an annual FASTag pass for private vehicles, priced at ₹3,000. This initiative is set to commence on August 15, 2025, allowing private vehicle owners to enjoy cost-effective and hassle-free travel on national highways. With this pass, vehicle owners can pass through tolls up to 200 times in a year.

Details of the New Pass System

Minister Gadkari shared on social media that this service is specifically designed for non-commercial vehicles, aiming to facilitate smooth and uninterrupted travel on national highways. He mentioned that a dedicated link for obtaining the pass will soon be available on the NHAI and MoRTH websites, as well as on the 'Highway Travel App.' The renewal process will also be conducted online.

Benefits of the New Pass System

Gadkari explained that the new annual pass policy aims to address longstanding issues related to toll plazas located within a 60-kilometer radius. Key benefits include simplifying toll payments through a single digital transaction, reducing waiting times at toll plazas, minimizing congestion, and eliminating disputes. This announcement is expected to provide significant relief to millions of private vehicle drivers, making their journeys not only faster but also more comfortable and stress-free.

Cost Savings for Vehicle Owners

Currently, frequent travelers passing through specific toll plazas can obtain a monthly pass by submitting address proof and documents, costing ₹340 per month, which totals ₹4,080 annually. Earlier this year, Minister Gadkari hinted at the ministry's plans for a pass scheme for car owners. Officials view this initiative as a solution to various challenges, including public opposition to toll plazas within city limits, issues at toll plazas located less than 60 kilometers apart, and disputes at collection points.

Rationale Behind the New Pass System

Data indicates that out of the total ₹55,000 crore in toll revenue for 2023-24, private cars contributed only ₹8,000 crore. Analysis of toll transactions reveals that while private cars account for 53% of total traffic, they generate only 21% of the revenue. Furthermore, between 6 AM and 10 PM, private vehicles make up approximately 60% of traffic, while commercial vehicles maintain a steady presence throughout the day and night.
