Shift in Strategy for Israel's Prime Minister

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remarked that following military actions in Iran, numerous opportunities have emerged, particularly regarding the potential release of hostages still held in Gaza. During his address at a Shin Bet security agency facility in southern Israel, he emphasized the necessity of resolving the Gaza situation and asserted that Hamas must be defeated.

Netanyahu stated, "As you may be aware, many opportunities have arisen after this victory. Our first priority is to rescue the hostages. Naturally, we also need to address the Gaza issue and defeat Hamas, but I am confident we can achieve both objectives." This statement indicates a notable change in his stance towards the ongoing conflict with Hamas, prioritizing the recovery of hostages over the previously emphasized goal of Hamas's destruction.

Previously, Netanyahu had proclaimed a "total victory" over Hamas as Israel's main focus, sidelining the release of hostages. His recent comments come in response to increasing pressure from families of the hostages.

As Netanyahu seeks a resolution to the conflict, U.S. President Donald Trump has been urging Israel to negotiate a ceasefire with Hamas. Trump, who has been a supporter of Netanyahu amid his legal challenges, reiterated his stance on social media, stating, "MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!"

Additionally, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff has proposed a 60-day ceasefire plan that includes the release of 10 living and 18 deceased hostages, with discussions for a permanent ceasefire to follow. Notably, Hamas has requested stronger assurances for a lasting cessation of hostilities.
