Israel's Stance on Security Following US-Iran Agreement

In a recent statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation following the announcement of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. He emphasized that Israel's challenges are far from over, asserting that the country will maintain its presence in security zones, particularly in Lebanon. Netanyahu remarked, "Israel has secured key areas from which Hezbollah has posed threats to our nation. We will persist in these security zones at all costs," during a press briefing conducted in Hebrew.

During the conference, Netanyahu defended Israel's military engagements with Iran, claiming that these actions have mitigated an immediate and existential threat stemming from Tehran's nuclear aspirations. When questioned about the recent deal, he noted that while he often aligns with President Trump, their perspectives do not always coincide. "In the U.S., people claim Trump fulfills all my requests. In Israel, it's said that I comply with his wishes. Both assertions are inaccurate. Our relationship is that of long-time partners, with many agreements and occasional disagreements," Netanyahu explained.

Reactions within Israel regarding the Memorandum of Understanding established between President Trump and Iran have varied. Iran's Supreme National Security Council announced that a memorandum had been finalized, effectively concluding the conflict after extensive negotiations. They stated that all military actions across various fronts, including Lebanon, would cease "immediately and permanently." Despite this, Israel has indicated that its military operations will persist, asserting that the agreement does not apply to their actions in Lebanon.

Israel's Defence Minister, Israel Katz, reiterated on Monday that both he and Netanyahu are committed to a clear policy ensuring that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will remain in security zones across Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza indefinitely. This strategy aims to safeguard the border and Israeli communities from jihadist threats. Katz characterized these security zones as "one of the IDF’s significant accomplishments" in the ongoing multi-front conflict since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. He emphasized that Israel opposes any withdrawal from Lebanon, regardless of external pressures. Katz concluded by stating that he and Netanyahu have communicated these positions to President Trump and other senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, affirming, "We will not compromise on Israel’s security interests and the protection of our citizens."
