Netanyahu Advocates for Stronger Alliance with India Amid Regional Tensions
Proposal for an 'Iron Alliance'
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested the establishment of an "iron alliance" with India during a session in the Knesset. He emphasized the need for collaboration among nations that uphold moderation and human dignity, stating, "In the face of extremist Islam that threatens all humanity and free nations, we will build together an iron alliance. This alliance will stand against those who glorify death and aim to drag us back to the barbarism of the Middle Ages."
Netanyahu elaborated on the growing bilateral relationship, noting significant increases in trade and cooperation, and described the friendship between Israel and India as remarkable. He remarked, "Israel is stronger than ever, and India is stronger than ever." His comments were made just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's significant address in the Knesset.
He praised India's support following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, expressing gratitude for Modi's moral and decisive backing, stating, "We will never forget this." Netanyahu characterized Israel's current military actions as a "defensive war for truth and humanity's future," asserting that they are determined to overcome the jihadist threat.
Formation of the 'Hexagon Alliance'
Netanyahu's call for an iron alliance follows his earlier proposal for a Hexagon alliance, a strategic coalition centered around India, announced on February 22. This initiative comes amid rising tensions in the region, particularly between Israel and Iran. Additionally, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have recently entered into a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, often referred to as an 'Islamic NATO,' with Turkey also expressing interest in joining.
