Nepal's Gen Z Protests: Criminal Charges Recommended Against Former PM and Officials

In Nepal, an inquiry is underway regarding the Gen Z protests that occurred in September 2025, backed by a government-supported commission. This commission has recommended filing criminal charges against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and several high-ranking officials.

Legal Action Against Former PM?
The violent protests that took place from September 8-9, 2025, resulted in the deaths of at least 77 individuals. Initiated due to a ban on social media, the protests amplified public outrage over widespread corruption in the country. A report obtained by a news agency stated, 'The Nepal government has decided to recommend an investigation, questioning, and prosecution against the executive head, PM KP Sharma Oli.' The report also indicated that former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and former police chief Chandra Kuber Khapung should also be investigated and prosecuted.

Negligence During Protests
The report highlighted that both Ramesh Lekhak and Oli failed to take necessary actions to prevent loss of life and property during the protests, despite their responsibility for maintaining law and order. While there was no evidence of direct orders to fire, it was noted that no efforts were made to control or stop the gunfire, leading to the tragic loss of minors' lives due to negligence.

Details of the Investigation
It is important to note that the protests led to arson in parliament and government offices, resulting in widespread unrest and the downfall of Oli's government. Shortly thereafter, former Chief Justice of Nepal, Sushila Karki, was appointed as interim Prime Minister. Her first task was to establish a commission to investigate the violence, as victims have been demanding a report. Commission member Bigyan Raj Sharma stated that the team has interviewed over 200 individuals and compiled a report of 900 pages, which includes more than 8,000 additional pages.
