Nepal PM Balendra Shah Sparks Controversy Over Border Remarks
Prime Minister's Statements on Border Dispute
On Sunday, Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed Parliament regarding the ongoing border dispute with India, stating that he has become aware of Nepal's own encroachments into Indian territory. His comments, intended to clarify the situation, instead ignited a significant controversy. Shortly after, the Nepal Foreign Ministry clarified that Shah's remarks pertained to issues of 'no-man’s land encroachments' and 'cross-border occupation' rather than asserting any territorial claims.
Details from Balen Shah
During the parliamentary session, Shah mentioned, “The Nepal government has officially sent a diplomatic note to India regarding the encroachment of territories, including Lipulekh, and we have received their response.” He emphasized that both nations have agreed to collaboratively address the issue with the assistance of historians, surveyors, and relevant experts through diplomatic channels.
When pressed by a lawmaker about the Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani areas, Shah asserted that the encroachment issue is mutual, stating, “It is not just India that has encroached on Nepalese territories; Nepal has also encroached on Indian territories in various locations.” He urged both countries to review the facts and resolve the matter amicably.
Shah also indicated that Kathmandu has raised this issue with China and the United Kingdom, noting that the historical context dates back to the British colonial period.
Reactions to Shah's Comments
The Prime Minister's statements have led to backlash from opposition lawmakers, including Basana Thapa from the Nepali Congress and Ramesh Malla from the Nepali Communist Party, who have called for his remarks to be removed from the parliamentary record. They demanded that Shah either substantiate his claims regarding Nepal's encroachments or retract his statement. Former Nepal foreign minister Pradip Gyawali has also reportedly requested an apology from the Prime Minister. Additionally, many users on social media have criticized Shah's comments, while several experts have dismissed them as unfounded.
