Neglected Memorial in Margherita Highlights Apathy Towards Freedom Fighters

A Symbol of Disrespect
Doomdooma, July 5: The 'Swahid Stambha', established in 1956 at Margherita Bazaar to commemorate the brave freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's independence, is currently suffering from neglect and encroachment, turning it into a representation of indifference.
This memorial, built by the local community, is now engulfed in dirt and unauthorized commercial activities. Local traders and shopkeepers have not only encroached upon the area surrounding the memorial but have also been accused of transforming it into an eyesore with paan spits, tobacco stains, and litter. The deteriorating condition of the 'Swahid Stambha' has deeply disturbed the conscientious members of society.
Although a small boundary wall was erected by the North Eastern Coal Fields (Coal India Ltd) around the memorial decades ago, it has significantly deteriorated over time. Cracks have formed, and the wall now stands in a dilapidated state, failing to safeguard the sanctity of the site.
According to representatives from the Margherita Bazaar Committee, numerous shops have illegally expanded their operations onto the land designated for the memorial, complicating the organization of national events such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and Gandhi Jayanti due to limited space and unsanitary conditions.
Despite numerous complaints lodged with the Margherita Co-district Administration, Margherita Municipal Board, and local MLA Bhaskar Sharma, no substantial action has been taken to address the issue.
Santosh Chetry, president of the Margherita Bazaar Committee, expressed his sorrow and frustration regarding the situation, condemning the careless actions of the local business community. He urged all traders and shopkeepers to fulfill their civic responsibilities by maintaining cleanliness around the memorial.
Various social organizations and local residents have rallied together, demanding immediate measures to restore the dignity of this historic site and ensure that the legacy of India's courageous martyrs is neither forgotten nor disrespected.
