Historic Achievement for Neeru Dhanda

Neeru Dhanda's remarkable victory in trap shooting at the Asian Games has been celebrated by her father, Suresh, who shared insights into her journey into the sport. Initially, Neeru practiced with a borrowed gun due to financial constraints faced by her family. Her achievement is significant as she is the first Indian woman to secure an individual gold medal in trap shooting at the Asian Games. During her debut, she set an Asian record in the qualification round, hitting 28 out of 30 targets.

Suresh expressed his joy, stating, "I am very happy. The entire village is celebrating this achievement, not just me. As a farmer, this news has brought immense joy to our family and the community."

Support from Family and Friends

Suresh recounted how Neeru's entry into shooting was facilitated by her cousin, wrestler Somveer, who encouraged her to pursue the sport. He noted, "We didn't even own a gun; she practiced with someone else's. We never anticipated she would achieve such heights. Somveer's support was crucial in her journey."

Team Silver Medal

On a previous day, Neeru also contributed to the Indian women's trap team, winning a silver medal alongside teammates Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. The team scored a total of 328 points, finishing behind China, who secured gold with 346 points, while Kuwait took home the bronze with 325 points. Neeru was the standout performer for India, scoring 118 out of 125.

Following her individual gold medal success, Neeru Dhanda is set to compete in the mixed-team trap event with Kynan Chenai on the 11th day of the Asian Games.
