Neeraj Chopra Shines at Doha Diamond League, Secures Commonwealth Games Spot
Neeraj Chopra's Impressive Comeback
Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra expressed his delight after a successful return to competitive athletics at the Doha Diamond League 2026. He achieved an impressive throw of 85.69 meters, securing his qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games during his first event of the season.
On Saturday, Chopra shared a video of his performance on social media, stating, "Thrilled to be back on the field. The 85.69m throw felt great, and I'm ready for the upcoming season!" After an eight-month hiatus due to a back injury that kept him out since last season, this event marked his return to the international stage. Although he narrowly missed a podium finish, his performance showed promising signs.
Performance Overview
Chopra started the competition with a foul throw but quickly regained his form in a competitive field. His best throw of 85.69m came on his third attempt, placing him in third position after the third round and comfortably surpassing the qualification mark for the Commonwealth Games.
He followed this with a throw of 83.45m in the fourth round but could not improve further, recording another foul on his fifth attempt. Consequently, he dropped to fourth place and did not advance to the final three-athlete shootout.
Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage took first place with a throw of 88.68m, while Grenada's Anderson Peters secured second with 86.38m. American Curtis Thompson finished third with a throw of 85.99m, just 30 centimeters ahead of Chopra.
Significance of Doha
The Doha venue is particularly meaningful for Chopra, as it was here last year that he first surpassed the 90m mark, a significant achievement that solidified his reputation as one of the top javelin throwers globally.
