Neeraj Chopra's Season Opener

Renowned Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is poised to launch his 2026 athletics season at the Doha Diamond League in Qatar this Friday. His participation was confirmed after the event organizers released the entry list on Monday.

Recovery and Comeback

This upcoming event will be Chopra's first competition of the year, following a recovery period from a back injury sustained during a training camp in Switzerland. His last competitive outing was at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September 2025.

Recent Selection for Commonwealth Games

Chopra's inclusion in the Doha event comes shortly after he was provisionally named in India's 32-member athletics team for the Commonwealth Games 2026.

History at the Doha Diamond League

This marks Chopra's fourth consecutive appearance at the Doha Diamond League. He triumphed in the 2023 meet with a throw of 88.67m, secured second place in 2024 with a throw of 88.36m, and set a national record of 90.23m last year, although he finished second to Julian Weber.

Competitive Field Ahead

The men's javelin event in Doha promises to be highly competitive. Although Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem has withdrawn, Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage, who recently achieved a remarkable throw of 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League, will be competing. This performance has placed him eighth on the all-time world list and made him the second-best Asian performer, following Nadeem's 92.97m at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The lineup also includes reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott, former world champions Anderson Peters and Julius Yego, along with Curtis Thompson and Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch.

Diamond League Circuit

The Doha meet is the seventh event in the 2026 Diamond League series, which will culminate with the season finale in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
