On December 22, two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra and his spouse, Himani Mor, who is also a former tennis player, paid a visit to Ram Nath Kovind, the former President of India, at his home. Kovind shared the news on X, highlighting their seasonal greetings during this courtesy visit.
Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Recognition
In October, Neeraj Chopra was honored with the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. This recognition was awarded to the 27-year-old athlete during a ceremony in New Delhi, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to sports.
Although his official appointment date was April 16, the formal pipping ceremony occurred on October 22, where Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented him with the insignia of the honorary rank.
Neeraj Chopra's Remarkable Achievements
Neeraj Chopra, born in 1997 in Khandra village, Panipat, Haryana, has made significant strides in javelin throw. He secured India's first Olympic gold in athletics at the Tokyo 2020 Games and followed it with a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Additionally, he became the first Indian to win a senior athletics world championship gold in Budapest 2023, after previously earning a silver in Oregon 2022, thus ending a 19-year medal drought for India at the World Championships.
His accolades also include victories at the Asian Games (2018, 2023), Commonwealth Games (2018), Asian Athletics Championships (2017), and the Diamond League. Neeraj's personal best throw of 90.23 meters, achieved in 2025 at the Doha Diamond League, stands as the national record.
Awards and Honors
Neeraj has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Arjuna Award in 2018 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award for 2021, which are among India's highest sports honors. In 2022, he was awarded the Padma Shri, the nation's highest civilian award, along with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal from the Indian military for his excellence in sports.
