Neeraj Chopra expressed his contentment with qualifying for the javelin final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, despite facing challenging weather in Glasgow. Alongside Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh also secured their spots in the men's javelin final after a tough qualification round impacted by strong winds.
Chopra Discusses Weather Challenges
Following the qualification round, Chopra pointed out the cold and erratic winds that complicated the throwers' ability to gauge their throws accurately. He noted that his throw of 79.61 meters was sufficient to meet the primary qualification objective. "I’m pleased to have reached the final, which was the goal of the qualification. The conditions were quite harsh, with the wind not only being cold but also unpredictable. It made it challenging to determine the right direction for our throws," he stated.
Indian Athletes' Qualification Journey
Neeraj, known for his ability to qualify with a single impressive throw, had to wait until his second attempt to secure his final spot. He began with a throw of 76.28 meters but improved to 79.61 meters on his second attempt, placing him fifth in the qualification rankings. He chose not to make a third attempt after confirming his position among the top 12.
Yash Vir Singh started with a throw of 73.89 meters and gradually improved, achieving his best throw of 78.36 meters on his final attempt, which secured him the 10th position.
Rohit Yadav also qualified with a steady performance, starting with 77.04 meters and reaching a best of 78.37 meters in his second throw, placing him ninth overall. He opted out of his final attempt as his qualification was secure.
Qualification Results and Leading Athletes
Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage led the qualification standings with an impressive throw of 82.84 meters, followed by Grenada's Anderson Peters at 81.29 meters. South Africa's Douw Smit (80.64 meters) and England's Ben East (80.38 meters) also surpassed the 80-meter mark.
Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan qualified in seventh place with a throw of 78.63 meters, while several prominent athletes faced difficulties due to the challenging conditions.
In the final qualification list, Neeraj finished fifth, Rohit ninth, and Yash Vir Singh tenth, with all three Indian athletes advancing to the medal round.
