A significant disaster was narrowly avoided on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway's Mandi–Pandoh section when a large retaining wall collapsed near Jagar Nala on Wednesday morning, putting nearly 20 families living nearby in jeopardy.
The wall, part of the ongoing four-lane highway project, unexpectedly failed, damaging approximately 30 meters of the roadway. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the incident has caused considerable alarm among residents whose homes are situated directly below the affected area.
Adding to the anxiety is the fact that this collapse occurred before the monsoon season. Locals are now expressing doubts about the construction's integrity, fearing that if such incidents are happening now, the risks could escalate significantly during the heavy rains.
Residents claim this is not an isolated incident; a similar collapse had occurred previously, prompting the construction company to rebuild the wall. However, its failure shortly after has raised serious concerns regarding the quality of construction and accountability.
The threat remains, as cracks have already been observed in adjacent retaining walls, suggesting the potential for further collapses. For the nearly 20 families affected, the fear of a sudden landslide or structural failure is palpable.
Local residents have voiced their frustration, urging the district administration to take immediate action. A villager named Surat Ram warned that without prompt preventive measures, a major disaster could ensue. He called for a comprehensive inspection of the site, reinforcement of vulnerable structures, and strict accountability for those responsible for the alleged negligence.
In response, Satya, the Project Manager of the construction firm, attributed the collapse to soil settlement in the area. He assured that the situation would be assessed with expert consultation and that the retaining wall would be reconstructed with enhanced safety measures.
With lives at risk and questions surrounding infrastructure stability, this incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent construction standards along this vital highway corridor, as residents await prompt and effective action from the authorities.
