NDA Staking Claim to Govern Assam

Caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with other NDA party leaders met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and staked claim to form the next Govt.

Guwahati, May 10: On Sunday, leaders from the NDA coalition convened with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan in Guwahati to officially claim the formation of the new state government, led by Chief Minister-elect Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma announced, “I have been chosen as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party. The NDA partners AGP and BPF have also designated me as their leader. I possess the backing of 102 NDA MLAs, as evidenced by their signatures,” while presenting the letter to the Governor.

Accompanying Sarma were Union Minister J P Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who were appointed as the BJP’s central observer and co-observer, respectively.

After the meeting with the Governor, Nadda commended Sarma’s leadership and the achievements of the BJP-led administration in Assam.

“Sarma has significantly bolstered the double-engine government in Assam, contributing to the state's progress. I extend my congratulations to him. Together with 102 MLAs, we approached the Governor to assert our claim to form the government, and I am confident that the Governor will soon invite him to establish the next government,” Nadda stated.

Emphasizing the governance model of the BJP, Nadda remarked that the Centre has ushered in a new political culture centered on accountability and responsiveness.

“I want to clarify that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, a new political culture has taken shape. This government is proactive, responsive, accountable, and operates on a report-card basis. All commitments made to the people of Assam have been honored, and additional initiatives have been undertaken. This trend will persist in the future,” he added.

Earlier that day, caretaker Chief Minister Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party during a meeting at Bajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.

Eight distinct proposals supporting Sarma’s candidacy were presented by senior BJP leaders and MLAs, facilitating his oath-taking for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam.

The inauguration ceremony for the new BJP-led NDA government is set for May 12 at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi anticipated to attend, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and Guwahati Traffic Police have issued a traffic advisory in preparation for the event.

With the NDA securing the backing of 102 MLAs and formally asserting their claim to the Governor, the groundwork is now laid for the establishment of the new government in Assam.
