NDA's Seat Distribution for Assam Elections

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has completed its seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. The BJP will contest 89 seats, while the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) will run in 26 seats, and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) will compete in 11 seats. The Election Commission of India announced the election dates for Assam on Sunday, with voting scheduled for April 9 and counting set for May 4.


Assembly Composition and Previous Election Results

Assam's Assembly consists of 126 members, requiring 64 seats for a simple majority. In the 2021 elections, which were conducted in three phases, the BJP and its allies secured victories in 75 out of the 126 seats. The BJP won 60 seats, while its coalition partners AGP and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) claimed 9 and 6 seats, respectively.


Political Developments in Assam

In a significant political shift, Congress leader and Lok Sabha member Pradyut Bordoloi joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders. Bordoloi had resigned from Congress the previous day. The Chief Minister stated that the national president of the BJP, Nitin Naveen, approved Bordoloi's entry into the party on Tuesday. He added, "Congress leader and sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi has joined the BJP. Our state unit president Dilip Saikia welcomed him into the party." According to Bedabrata Bora, head of the media department for the Congress state unit, Bordoloi submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
