National Commission for Women Responds to Disturbing Incident

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken immediate notice of a disturbing incident in Kolkata, where a law student was allegedly gang-raped by two current students and a former student within the college premises. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar expressed her serious concerns in a letter to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, urging for a prompt and time-bound investigation under the relevant provisions of the BNS. She emphasized the necessity of providing the victim with compensation under Section 396 of the BNS, along with comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support. The commission has requested a detailed action report within three days.


Details of the Incident

The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:50 PM on June 25. A complaint was filed on Thursday night, leading to the arrest of three individuals by the Kasba police station. The suspects have been identified as 31-year-old Manojit Mishra, 19-year-old Jaib Ahmed, and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay. According to police reports, the complainant is a student at South Kolkata Law College, who accused a former student and two college staff members. The FIR indicates that two of the accused, Manojit and Jaib, were arrested on Wednesday, and their mobile phones were confiscated.


Arrests and College Response

Pramit was apprehended from his residence on Friday, and his phone was also seized. All three suspects were presented in an Alipore court on Friday and have been remanded to police custody until July 1. According to the college's Vice Principal, Noyna Chatterjee, Manojit is a former student whose involvement in the crime is under investigation. Chatterjee stated that Manojit had been appointed as a temporary staff member by the college's governing body and that they were informed immediately after the incident came to light. She has called for strict punishment for those involved.
