New Delhi, May 23: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated suo motu action following alarming media reports about an alleged acid attack and severe domestic abuse against a woman in Pune.

The incident involves a man who reportedly poured floor-cleaning acid on his wife's private areas due to suspicions of infidelity, confining her at home for several days without medical assistance, as stated by the Commission.

Vijaya Rahatkar, the NCW Chairperson, has reached out to the Director General of Police in Maharashtra, urging for immediate and rigorous action regarding the case.

The Commission has requested a comprehensive Action Taken Report (ATR) within a week, detailing the FIR filed, legal provisions applied under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the status of the investigation, arrests made, and the medical treatment and forensic analysis of the survivor, along with the recovery of the chemical used in the attack.

Additionally, the NCW has asked for information on the safety measures and rehabilitation efforts for the survivor and her children, emphasizing that the investigation should be handled with the highest sensitivity and urgency.

In its statement, the NCW condemned the incident, asserting that acid attacks, domestic violence, and abuse against women are serious offenses that warrant the strictest legal repercussions.

This incident occurred in the Uruli Kanchan area of Pune, where a man is accused of attacking his 24-year-old wife and keeping her locked up for nearly 15 days.

The attack took place on April 20, when the husband, inebriated, confronted his wife over alleged infidelity. The argument escalated into violence, with the husband reportedly assaulting her.

Frustrated by having daughters instead of a son, he allegedly used a bottle of acid during their confrontation, inflicting severe pain on her. When she attempted to escape, he is said to have restrained her and continued the assault.

The victim reportedly went without medical care for several days and only managed to escape after almost 15 days, reaching out to her relatives, which led to the crime being uncovered. The police are actively investigating the case.
