A Call to Protect Our Oceans


Bhubaneswar: On Sunday, Naveen Patnaik, the president of BJD and Leader of Opposition in the Odisha assembly, encouraged citizens to commit to preventing plastic waste from polluting the oceans.


His remarks were made in honor of World Oceans Day.


Patnaik emphasized the importance of oceans, stating, “They are the lungs of our planet, essential for sustaining life. Oceans produce oxygen, help regulate our climate, and are vital sources of food and medicine. On #WorldOceansDay, let’s pledge to keep our oceans free from plastic waste for a healthier planet,” he shared on X.


In a related effort, Greenpeace India showcased a sand art installation at Chandrabhaga Beach in Konark, aiming to raise awareness about the ocean's crucial role in maintaining biodiversity, climate regulation, and supporting coastal communities.


Greenpeace India also pointed out that the recent sinking of a cargo ship off the coast of Kerala on May 25 is part of a larger issue. They highlighted that our oceans are under threat from various challenges, including climate change, pollution, overfishing, and industrial activities, affecting regions from Odisha to Kerala.
