Naveen Patnaik Criticizes Change of Indian Hockey Jersey Color from Blue to Orange
Patnaik Expresses Discontent Over Jersey Color Change
On Thursday, Naveen Patnaik, the president of the BJD and former Chief Minister of Odisha, expressed his profound disappointment regarding the Indian hockey team's transition from its traditional blue jersey to an orange one. He emphasized that blue represents India's rich sporting heritage and national pride. This change coincides with the upcoming FIH Men's and Women's Hockey World Cups, set to commence on August 14 and 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively. The decision has ignited controversy, with former Indian captain and Olympian Viren Rasquinha also voicing his concerns.
Significance of the Blue Jersey
Patnaik stated, "I am deeply anguished to learn that the iconic blue color of the Indian hockey team's jersey has been altered to saffron. This shade of blue is more than just a color; it embodies the emotions tied to our nation's sporting legacy." He shared his thoughts on social media, highlighting how this color has historically united fans through victories and defeats alike. He noted that the blue jersey has been worn during Olympic medal wins, with the national anthem resonating on global platforms. He remarked, "#Blue is inspired by the blue chakra in our national flag, symbolizing our national pride and identity. This color belongs to every Indian."
Critique of Political Motivations
Patnaik criticized the decision to change the jersey color, asserting that it should not be influenced by political shifts. He drew parallels between the blue jersey's importance and other iconic national sports colors, warning that such alterations could jeopardize India's sporting heritage and unity. He stated, "When our national hockey teams faced sponsorship challenges, Odisha was the first state to step up and support them. Every Odia took pride in this contribution to national hockey. After 41 years, our men's team finally secured an Olympic medal. The change in government should not dictate the colors of our national teams. This is petty politics at its worst."
Accusations Against the Odisha BJP Government
Patnaik accused the Odisha government of influencing the jersey color change for political reasons, claiming it undermines the longstanding support Odisha has provided to Indian hockey. He stated, "I have been informed that this decision was made under pressure from the BJP Government in Odisha. While they may deny it, the public has witnessed this government's obsession with altering the colors of public infrastructure. Now, they have extended this to our national team colors. I strongly condemn this politicization of hockey, which has hurt the sentiments of countless sports enthusiasts across the nation and tarnished Odisha's pride in supporting hockey."
