Widespread Demonstrations Across Pakistan

In Pakistan, escalating fuel prices have sparked widespread protests throughout the country. Amid lockdowns, citizens have taken to the streets, with significant unrest observed from Karachi to Peshawar. According to a report from a local newspaper, Sindh has witnessed large-scale demonstrations, particularly in cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Jacobabad, where both citizens and political activists are voicing their opposition to the rising fuel costs and inflation.

Unique Protest Tactics in Sukkur

In Sukkur, the Sindh United Party (SUP) organized a unique protest outside the press club, where participants donned shrouds and staged a symbolic hunger strike. SUP leader Aidan Jageerani criticized the recent reduction of 80 PKR in fuel prices, labeling it a misleading cut. He pointed out that petrol prices had surged by 137 PKR per liter in recent weeks, exacerbating the already rampant inflation that is making it increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to afford essential goods.

PTI Activists Join the Fray

Simultaneously, activists from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Gohar Khan Khoso, also protested in the same area. Khoso highlighted that fuel prices have soared to 378 PKR per liter, adversely affecting the financial stability of average families. He warned that if immediate relief and tax reductions are not implemented, these protests could escalate nationwide. Additionally, the Awami Tehreek organized a large rally from Teer Chowk to Ghanta Ghar, where leaders Noor Ahmed Katiyar and Sarwan Jatoi criticized the government for using global tensions as an excuse to raise fuel prices to record levels.

Innovative Protests by PTI Leaders

In a creative form of protest, PTI MNA Iqbal Afridi rode a bicycle to Parliament, highlighting the burden of high petrol prices. He dismissed the recently announced subsidy as a mere façade aimed at pacifying public anger. Reports indicate that various labor organizations, including the National Trade Union Federation and Home-Based Women Workers Federation, have united for a joint protest in Karachi.

Labor Leaders Demand Action

Protesters have condemned the hike in fuel prices and the economic policies associated with international financial institutions. Labor leaders are calling for the removal of petroleum taxes, an increase in wages, and a halt to foreign debt repayments. Furthermore, a bicycle rally organized by the Aam Insaan Tehreek in Jacobabad highlighted the struggles of citizens who can no longer afford transportation costs, urging the government to reduce its expenditures and stop burdening the public.
