Incident Sparks Outrage and Calls for Justice

Following a tragic incident in Balasore, Odisha, where a college student reportedly set herself on fire after alleged sexual harassment, the National Women's Commission (NWC) has taken immediate notice. On Sunday, the commission urged the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure strict action against those responsible.


Describing the student's self-immolation as 'extremely distressing,' NWC chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar emphasized the need for a 'fair and timely' investigation by the Odisha DGP.


The commission has also instructed the Odisha police to take stringent measures against the accused and to provide the victim with all necessary medical and psychological support at no cost.


Furthermore, the NWC stated, 'A report on the actions taken must be submitted to the commission within three days.' It was reported that the 20-year-old student from a government college in Balasore allegedly set herself ablaze after enduring sexual harassment and academic threats from her department head. The student, who suffered burns covering up to 90% of her body, is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
