National Human Rights Commission Takes Action Against Police Brutality in Meerut
NHRC Responds to Allegations of Police Violence in Meerut
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has adopted a firm stance regarding the alleged brutal police baton charge during a peaceful protest in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Following reports of serious injuries among several demonstrators, the commission has issued notices to the state's Home Secretary and the Director General of Police. According to the NHRC, the allegations presented in the complaints appear to indicate a violation of the victims' human rights.
In accordance with the proceedings of the case, a bench led by NHRC member Priyank Kanungo has taken cognizance of the complaint under Section 12 of the Human Rights Protection Act, 1993. The directive issued on July 10 instructs the NHRC registrar to send notices to the Home Secretary and the DGP of Uttar Pradesh, demanding a report on actions taken within 15 days.
This case is linked to a complaint filed by Sunil Ahirwar, a resident of Bhopal. He alleges that during a peaceful protest demanding justice for the Lalita Gautam murder case, police resorted to a brutal baton charge without provocation, resulting in serious injuries to many protesters.
The complainant also claims that widely circulated videos related to the incident show senior police officials ruthlessly beating helpless individuals already in custody, which constitutes a clear case of torture in detention. He described this as a stark example of the complete failure of the rule of law and a severe violation of human dignity.
In his complaint, Sunil Ahirwar has urged the NHRC to intervene immediately. He has requested a detailed report from the Chief Secretary and the DGP, the initiation of an independent investigation, and verification of the viral video's authenticity to hold those responsible accountable. Additionally, he has called for immediate medical rehabilitation and legal financial compensation for all injured parties, as well as prompt criminal and departmental action against the culpable police officers.
