Exciting Election Dynamics in Nalbari

Nalbari, March 22: The upcoming elections in the Nalbari constituency promise to be highly competitive, with both the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress having declared their candidates for three Assembly seats in the district.

The BJP has put forward minister Jayanta Malla Baruah as its candidate for the Nalbari LAC.

On the other hand, the Congress has nominated former MLA Ashok Sarma for this constituency.

Sarma previously won the Nalbari LAC seat as a BJP candidate in the 2016 Assembly elections but was not granted a ticket by the BJP for the 2021 elections.

Instead, the BJP awarded the ticket to Jayanta Malla Baruah, who had transitioned from Congress to BJP.

In the 2011 Assembly elections, Jayanta Malla Baruah was elected from Nalbari LAC on a Congress ticket but later departed from the party. In 2016, Ashok Sarma, leading the BJP, secured the ticket and defeated the Congress candidate Pradyut Kumar Bhuyan.

However, in the 2021 elections, the BJP chose to overlook the sitting MLA Ashok Sarma and nominated Jayanta Malla Baruah instead.

Feeling sidelined within the BJP, Ashok Sarma eventually left the party and joined Congress, where he is now the candidate for Nalbari.

This election is poised to see a contest between a former Congress member and a former BJP member.

It will be intriguing to see if Jayanta Malla Baruah can maintain the BJP's winning streak or if Ashok Sarma can turn the tide for Congress.

The Nalbari Assembly constituency has a total voter base of 200,278.

Both parties have also announced their candidates for the former Dharampur and current Tihu constituencies in the district.

The BJP has nominated the sitting minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, while Congress has chosen Ratul Patowary, who faced defeat in the previous Assembly elections.

Both candidates are actively working to win over voters, especially with the recent changes in constituency boundaries due to the inclusion of the Dharampur area in Tihu LAC, which has a total of 204,441 voters.

Similar electoral dynamics are expected in the Barkhetri constituency, reminiscent of the last elections.

This time, approximately 52,000 Hindu votes have shifted from Nalbari and Dharampur, while a significant number of Muslim votes have moved to the Tihu constituency, making the electoral battle even more compelling.

In the last Assembly elections, the primary contest was between Congress candidate Diganta Barman and former BJP MLA Narayan Deka.

Diganta Barman, the son of former Chief Minister Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, was elected as an MLA for the first time.

For this election, Congress has again nominated Diganta Barman, while the BJP has selected former MLA Narayan Deka, setting the stage for another fierce competition between the two parties in this constituency, which has 219,672 voters.
