Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Election 2026: Three Candidates Withdraw, 15 Remain in Contest

NAGAON, Sept 21: The deadline for withdrawing nominations for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election 2026 saw three candidates step back on Saturday, leaving a total of 15 candidates to compete in the election.
Following the examination of nomination papers, 18 candidates were deemed eligible to participate in the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency by-election. However, three candidates withdrew their nominations on Saturday. The candidates who withdrew include Abdul Salam from the All India Trinamool Congress (Mamata Banerjee faction), Karimullah Sheikh from the Nava Rang Congress Party, and Independent candidate Purushottam Behera.
This withdrawal means that 15 candidates will now vie for the position.
Initially, 25 candidates had submitted their nominations for the by-election, but seven were disqualified. The rejected candidates included Shah Alam, Pranab Kaushik, Rabul Haque, Khalil Uddin, Samsul Alam, Sikandar Ali, all Independents, and Pankaj Maurya from the Jay Prakash Janta Dal.
According to an announcement by the Returning Officer and District Commissioner of Nagaon, Aranyak Saikia, Pranab Kaushik's nomination was invalidated due to the non-payment of the security deposit, while the others were rejected for failing to complete the affidavit in Form 26.
The candidates still in the race include Devashish Sharma from the BJP, Sibamoni Bora from Congress, Badruddin Ajmal from AIUDF, Bornali Sharma from SUCI (Communist), Hafiz Burhanuddin from the National Road Map Party, Inamul Huda from RCPI (RB), and Independents Ayush Kumar Singh, Farooq Khan, Saifur Rahman, Mustakim Alam, Amiran Hussain, Manirul Hussain, Sabina Yasmin, Nazrul Islam, and Yunus Tamuli.
