Raha, July 3: A special POCSO court in Nagaon has handed down a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a 36-year-old man for the rape of a 14-year-old girl that occurred in 2021.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Chitra Rani Saikia, who presided over the POCSO Court, also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on the perpetrator.

The court's decision was based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother, detailing that the crime took place in Phulaguri, under the jurisdiction of the Raha police station, when the accused, Santanu Saikia, assaulted the girl in her home while her parents were away.

According to the complaint, Santanu threatened the victim with severe repercussions if she disclosed the incident to her parents.

"Following the investigation, Officer Samar Jyoti Deka from Raha Police Station submitted a chargesheet against the accused under case no. 265/2021, citing section 4 (2) of the POCSO Act. After reviewing testimonies from both sides and examining the evidence, the court found the accused guilty of rape," stated the judge.

"Three witnesses testified in court. Special Judge Saikia has sentenced the accused to 20 years in prison along with a fine of Rs. 10,000," added Sub-inspector Deka, the investigating officer.
