Nagaland Doctor Stalked and Molested in Gorakhpur: A Disturbing Incident

Incident Overview

A 25-year-old physician from Nagaland experienced a harrowing incident in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, where she was stalked for approximately 1.5 kilometers, subjected to molestation, and verbally assaulted with racial slurs, as reported by a local news outlet.

The victim, currently in her third year of obstetrics and gynecology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Gorakhpur, was returning to her campus from a shopping mall around 8 PM when she was pursued by three men who later attacked her.

According to Gorakhpur's Superintendent of Police, Abhinav Tyagi, two suspects have been apprehended, while efforts are ongoing to locate the third individual.

The complainant recounted that the men began following her on a motorcycle, hurling racial insults as she made her way back to the institution, situated about 1.5 kilometers away.

She reported that one assailant removed his shirt, while another inappropriately touched her, prompting her to scream for help, which caused the attackers to flee.

After the incident, she alerted her colleagues, who subsequently notified the authorities.

The police were informed of the situation on Monday, leading to the registration of a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which address assault with intent to outrage a woman's modesty, obscene acts, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Suraj Gupta, 22, and Amrit Vishwakarma, 21, both from the nearby Deoria district, where they operate shops. Their identification was made possible through surveillance footage from the area.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, condemned the incident, labeling it as 'deeply shameful.' He emphasized that racial discrimination and sexual harassment against women from the North East should not merely be sensationalized and forgotten, only to resurface with each new incident.
