Mysterious Footprint Sparks Devotion at Historic Dhubri Ghat
Devotees Flock to Dhubri Ghat
Dhubri, Feb 24: A sense of awe and reverence has enveloped Dhubri since Sunday, as crowds of devotees have gathered at the renowned Netai Dhubuni Ghat, where a mysterious footprint has reappeared on a large stone by the riverbank.
This mark, which is prominently visible to all visitors, is believed by locals to be the sacred ‘footprint’ of Netai Dhubuni, a revered figure deeply embedded in the region's folklore.
The emotional response from the public has been heightened by the striking resemblance to a similar incident nearly thirty years ago, when an identical footprint was reportedly discovered at the same site.
Older residents vividly recall that past event, and the current reemergence has reignited shared memories and devotion among the community.
Since Sunday, a steady stream of visitors has been arriving at the ghat, offering prayers and lighting incense sticks, with many viewing this occurrence as a positive spiritual omen.
According to mythological tales in the Padma Purana, after Lakshindar, the son of merchant Chand Sadagar, was fatally bitten by a snake, his devoted wife Beula embarked on a quest with her husband’s lifeless body in search of divine help.
Folklore suggests that she arrived at this very ghat, where, with the assistance of Netai Dhubuni, she received a sacred mantra that ultimately brought her husband back to life.
Netai Dhubuni is traditionally depicted as a celestial washerwoman who cleansed the garments of the gods along the banks of the Brahmaputra.
Additionally, local belief posits that the name ‘Dhubri’ is derived from ‘Dhubuni’, further emphasizing the ghat’s cultural and historical importance. It stands not only as a religious site but also as a vibrant symbol of Dhubri’s identity and mythological legacy.
Whether seen as a divine sign or an unexplained natural phenomenon, the reappearance of the ‘footprint’ has once again highlighted Dhubri’s sacred history, where faith, legend, and history intertwine along the timeless banks of the Brahmaputra.
