In Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, the so-called Burqa Gang is becoming increasingly active, with reports of women in burqas stealing items from shops. Just last Friday, a woman in a burqa was caught on camera stealing a demo backpack left outside a store. The CCTV footage has since gone viral on social media, prompting police to initiate efforts to apprehend the suspect based on the footage.
CCTV Captures the Theft
The incident took place in the busy Gol Market area of the city, where a woman in a burqa was recorded stealing a backpack valued at 1,600 rupees from outside a shop. Other women in burqas were also seen accompanying the thief during the act.
Shopkeeper's Account of the Incident
The shopkeeper, Harsh Gulati, reported that the theft occurred around 3:30 PM. He suspects that there were three to four individuals involved who had planned the theft. As soon as attention was diverted, the woman took the bag and left. Upon checking the CCTV footage, it became clear that the bag was missing, which was intended for demonstration purposes.
Police Assurance of Action
According to ASP Siddharth Mishra, a video surfaced on social media on April 10, showing a woman in a burqa stealing from a shop. The police have taken a complaint from the shop owner and are in the process of registering a case. They assure that action will be taken to apprehend the thief.
