Sreeshankar's Remarkable Performance

Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar achieved another remarkable podium finish by winning the silver medal in the men's long jump event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow on Day 7. This victory marked India's 13th medal at the Games.

At 27 years old, Sreeshankar, who previously secured a silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, recorded a personal best leap of 8.09 meters. He finished just behind Jamaica's Tajay Gayle, who took home the gold with a jump of 8.15 meters. Scotland's Stephen Mackenzie earned the bronze medal with a jump of 8.08 meters, as reported by ESPN.

Throughout the competition, Sreeshankar remained a strong contender for the gold medal. In a final attempt to surpass Gayle's mark, his sixth jump measured 7.97 meters, falling short by six centimeters.

With this silver medal, Sreeshankar has become the first Indian male long jumper to win two medals at the Commonwealth Games, further solidifying his status on the international athletics scene.

India also saw another competitor in the long jump event, Lokesh, who finished fifth in his Commonwealth Games debut. His best jump was 7.97 meters, while his final attempt measured 7.62 meters.

Athletics Highlights

The athletics events yielded positive results for India in other categories as well. Yashas Palaksha and Santosh Kumar Tamilarasan both qualified for the men's 400m hurdles final, clocking times of 49.65 seconds and 49.51 seconds, respectively, in the opening round. They finished eighth and seventh overall, securing their spots in the medal race set for July 31.

In the men's 200m, Animesh Kujur advanced to the semifinals after finishing seventh overall in the heats. India narrowly missed out on another medal in the women's shot put, where Manpreet placed fourth with a best throw of 17.49 meters. The gold medal was claimed by Canada's Sarah Mitton with a throw of 19.88 meters, while Nigeria's Jessica Oji and Lloydricia Cameron took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In addition to athletics, India's men's pairs team, consisting of Dinesh Kumar and Navneet Singh, triumphed over Namibia with a score of 2-0 in their sectional match in lawn bowls. Meanwhile, para-swimmers Suyash Narayan Jadhav and Chaitanya Vishwas Kulkarni finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's 50m freestyle S7 final.
