Mumbai, known as India's financial hub, has faced a tumultuous history marked by bomb blasts and terrorism over the past few decades. The period leading up to 2014 was particularly challenging for Mumbai. The city was shaken by local train bombings, the Zaveri Bazaar incident, and the horrific 26/11 terrorist attacks. During those times, ordinary citizens often felt anxious about their safety when stepping outside. The BJP asserts that the previous government's ineffective policies and the failures of intelligence agencies emboldened terrorists, leaving the city's security in a precarious state.
Crackdown on Infiltration and Crime
Upon assuming power, the BJP government prioritized security above all else. Initiatives ranged from installing an extensive network of CCTV cameras to enhancing coastal security. The government took decisive action against not only external terrorists but also hidden threats within the city. Campaigns were launched against illegal immigrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, whose increasing presence was believed to fuel crime and radicalism. The government also took steps to curb anti-national activities by removing encroachments.
Strong Measures Against Illegal Constructions
A significant step towards establishing the rule of law was the demolition of illegal constructions near the grave of Afzal Khan in Pratapgarh. For years, this land had been unlawfully occupied, with previous governments hesitant to act due to fears of losing voter support. However, in 2022, the ruling coalition adhered to a court order and demolished the illegal structures under heavy security. Similarly, the government sent a clear message by taking action against the accused in the Mira-Bhayander riots and demolishing an illegal shrine in the Mahim sea.
Critique of Opposition Politics
The BJP has accused the Maha Vikas Aghadi of ignoring extremists for the sake of vote bank politics. The party claims that whenever actions are taken against infiltrators, leaders from the MVA invoke human rights to defend them. The BJP has warned that such 'appeasement politics' could plunge Mumbai back into its previous state of insecurity.

Today, Mumbai's landscape has transformed. Festivals are celebrated peacefully, and police and security agencies are more vigilant than ever. The BJP maintains a clear stance that crime knows no religion, but providing shelter to criminals is an act of treason.
