Mumbai Welcomes Delayed Monsoon, Relief from Scorching Heat
Monsoon Arrives in Mumbai
Residents of Mumbai have found relief from the intense heat as the southwest monsoon finally made its appearance on Tuesday, arriving 13 days later than usual. The onset of the monsoon brought heavy rainfall overnight to Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. In light of the downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for the region.
Officials reported that despite the heavy rain, all major thoroughfares in the city remained open, and traffic flow was largely uninterrupted.
Weather Alerts Issued
At 4 AM on Wednesday, the weather department issued a three-hour 'red alert' for Mumbai and Palghar. They warned of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and winds gusting between 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. By 7 AM, the alert level was downgraded to 'orange' for the next three hours, predicting moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg districts.
Historical Context of Monsoon Arrival
Typically, the monsoon arrives in Mumbai around June 10. According to IMD data, the monsoon was even later in 2023, arriving on June 25. The most significant delays recorded were in 1974 and 1958, when the monsoon reached Mumbai on June 28.
An official stated that the heavy rainfall overnight did not disrupt road or rail traffic, with all major routes remaining open. Services on the suburban rail network continued to operate normally, and there were no interruptions to the operations of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services.
