Mumbai Welcomes Delayed Monsoon, Brings Much-Needed Relief from Heat
Monsoon Arrives in Mumbai
Residents of Mumbai have finally found relief from the intense heat as the southwest monsoon made its entrance on Tuesday, arriving 13 days later than usual. The onset of the monsoon brought heavy rainfall overnight to Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. In light of the downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for the region.
Officials reported that despite the heavy rain, all major thoroughfares in the city remained open, and traffic flow was largely unaffected.
Weather Alerts Issued
At 4 AM on Wednesday, the weather department issued a three-hour 'red alert' for Mumbai and Palghar. They warned of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and winds gusting between 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. By 7 AM, the alert level was downgraded to 'orange' for the next three hours, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg districts.
The southwest monsoon typically arrives in Mumbai by June 10, but in 2023, it was delayed until June 25. Historical data from the IMD indicates that the latest arrivals were recorded in 1974 and 1958, when the monsoon reached Mumbai on June 28.
Traffic and Services Unaffected
An official stated that the heavy rainfall overnight did not disrupt road or rail traffic, and all major routes in the city remained accessible. The suburban rail network operated normally, and there were no interruptions to the bus services provided by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).
