Mumbai-Pune Expressway to Undergo Major Expansion for Improved Traffic Flow

Significant Upgrade Planned for Mumbai-Pune Expressway

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, recognized as India's inaugural access-controlled expressway, is poised for a substantial enhancement. The current six-lane roadway is set to be widened to ten lanes, a move aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and ensuring safer, quicker travel for the thousands who commute daily. This ambitious initiative is being led by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), with an estimated budget of approximately Rs 14,000 crore. The proposal for this project has been drafted and submitted for approval from the state cabinet. Upon receiving the green light, the construction will proceed in phases.

Spanning 94.5 kilometers, this expressway links Mumbai and Pune, two significant economic and cultural centers. Over the years, the route has seen a notable increase in traffic, especially during weekends, holidays, and peak hours, leading to regular congestion, delays, and accidents. To alleviate this burden, plans include the addition of two lanes on each side. This expansion is expected to enhance traffic flow, decrease travel times, and lower the risk of accidents caused by abrupt braking and lane changes.
