Gathering Restrictions Announced by Mumbai Police
On Monday, the Mumbai Police issued an order prohibiting gatherings of five or more individuals throughout the city from July 23 to August 6. Officials indicated that this measure was taken due to concerns over potential disturbances to public peace and order. The directive bans processions, the use of loudspeakers and sound amplification devices, musical bands, and the setting off of fireworks during gatherings. This order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act.
Order Issued Due to Potential Law and Order Issues
The police decided to implement this order after receiving information from various sources regarding the likelihood of law and order disruptions, threats to public safety, and potential property damage. Consequently, precautionary measures were deemed necessary. The order specifies that these restrictions will be in effect from 12:01 AM on July 23 until midnight on August 6 in areas under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissioner.
Exemptions for Weddings and Funerals
Despite the restrictions, the order allows exemptions for wedding ceremonies and related events, funeral gatherings, legal meetings of companies, clubs, and cooperatives, as well as social gatherings related to the routine operations of clubs and associations. Additionally, gatherings at cinema halls, theaters, and other public entertainment venues are also exempt.
Court and Government Meetings Exempted
Furthermore, the order does not apply to official gatherings in courts, government offices, and local bodies, nor does it affect educational activities in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. Regular operations of factories, shops, and commercial establishments are also exempt from this order. Additionally, the restrictions do not apply to other gatherings and processions that have received approval from the relevant zonal DCP and their supervisory officers.
