Mumbai Indians Set for In-Depth Review of IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians are gearing up for a comprehensive evaluation of their underwhelming IPL 2026 season. Despite finishing ninth in the league with only eight points, batting coach Kieron Pollard emphasized that captain Hardik Pandya would not be blamed for the team's struggles. The season concluded with a loss to the Rajasthan Royals, marking a disappointing chapter for the five-time champions.

"This season was filled with 'what-ifs,'" Pollard remarked post-match, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. "If only we had done this or that, it could have been different."

"Overall, it has been a disappointing experience for all of us at Mumbai Indians. I believe our fans share this sentiment. We failed to perform consistently throughout the tournament and could not capitalize on any momentum we gained," he added.

Avoiding Impulsive Decisions

Pollard stated that the management would refrain from making hasty decisions immediately following the season's end.

"Now is not the right time to discuss that [post-mortem]. Making emotional decisions without proper reflection is not wise," he explained. "Everyone needs time to think and assess where things went wrong. This will lead to better decision-making in the future. Acting impulsively would be irresponsible from a management standpoint," he continued.

Need for Reflective Thinking

The former West Indies all-rounder mentioned that the review process would require significant introspection, especially since the franchise has not claimed the IPL title since 2020.

"Players will need to take a step back and consider what is necessary for improvement," Pollard stated. "It has been a while since we last won the championship, and we acknowledge this as a team. This disappointing season adds to our previous challenges, so deep reflection is essential."

Pollard Stands by Hardik Pandya

Amidst questions regarding Hardik's leadership and the team's retention strategy, Pollard defended both.

"If we look back to last year, we finished third [fourth in IPL 2025], which justifies some of the changes made. Now, finishing ninth, we shouldn't question it. We need to focus on the inconsistencies and strategically improve," he noted.

Supporting Hardik despite the tough season, Pollard remarked, "From a leadership standpoint, Hardik may not have had the season he desired. However, we did everything possible to support him in leading the franchise effectively."

He added, "When you lose, it's crucial to view it collectively. We all tried our best, but it simply didn't work out this time."

Bumrah's Fitness Issues

Pollard also disclosed that star bowler Jasprit Bumrah had been dealing with fitness concerns throughout the season, which affected his performance and led to his absence in the final match.

"Honestly, he came in with a slight injury after the [T20] World Cup. We attempted to manage it, but he wasn't at his best physically," Pollard explained. "He tried to contribute as much as he could."

Bumrah concluded the season with just four wickets in 13 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 8.37.

Regarding the decision to rest Bumrah for the last game, Pollard stated, "Winning that match wouldn't have changed our situation. We have depth in our bowling and young talent, so trying something different was a reasonable choice. We need to prioritize the long-term health of our players, especially someone as valuable as Bumrah for Indian cricket."
