Major Changes Ahead for Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians are undergoing significant transformations in their coaching lineup as they prepare for the IPL 2027 season. The franchise has decided to implement a substantial leadership overhaul.

Recently, Kieron Pollard was elevated from his role as batting coach to head coach. Additionally, former players Robin Uthappa, Mitchell McClenaghan, and Dhawal Kulkarni have been appointed as batting, bowling, and development bowling coaches, respectively, alongside T. Dilip, who continues as the fielding coach.

Following a disappointing performance in IPL 2026, where the team finished ninth with only four victories out of 14 matches, the five-time champions parted ways with several key figures, including Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga.

Rohit Sharma Returns as Captain

In a bid to break their title drought, the Mumbai Indians management is keen on having Rohit Sharma return as captain. This move aims to restore the team's stability and championship legacy that has characterized the franchise for the past decade.

Sources indicate that Rohit initially suggested Tilak Varma for the captaincy, but the franchise insisted he take the reins from Hardik Pandya, to which he has consented. Discussions regarding this transition occurred before Rohit's departure for New Zealand, where his insights were also sought for the new coaching appointments.

Rohit Sharma has accepted the captaincy role once again, marking a significant shift in the team's leadership strategy.

Rohit Sharma's Impressive Captaincy Record

Rohit Sharma's tenure as captain of the Mumbai Indians is marked by an impressive legacy that has established the team as a dominant force in the IPL. He took over leadership in the middle of IPL 2013, leading the team to its first title that year.

Under his guidance from 2013 to 2023, the franchise secured five IPL championships (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) and a Champions League T20 title in 2013. Rohit is recognized as the first captain to achieve five IPL trophies.

Throughout his captaincy, he has led the team in 158 matches, achieving 87 wins (including 89 Super Over victories) and a win percentage of 55.06%, making him the second-most successful captain in IPL history, following MS Dhoni.

As a captain, Rohit has scored 3986 runs, including 25 half-centuries, with an average of 28.07 and a strike rate of 129.37. His best season was in 2016, where he scored 489 runs at an average of 44.45.

Since IPL 2024, Rohit has played solely as a player, accumulating 1118 runs, including a century and seven fifties, demonstrating his adaptability and continued contribution as a senior opener.
