Mumbai City Extends Contract with Defender Tiri Until 2026
Tiri's Contract Extension with Mumbai City
Mumbai, June 2: Spanish defender Jose Luis Espinosa Arroyo, known as Tiri, has officially extended his contract with Mumbai City FC, ensuring his stay with the team until May 31, 2026. This upcoming season will mark Tiri's tenth year in the Indian Super League, a record for any foreign player.
Tiri first joined Mumbai City for the 2023–24 season and has since made 49 appearances for the team. In the latest 2024–25 Indian Super League season, he played in 21 matches, achieving nine clean sheets, 33 interceptions, and 84 recoveries, solidifying his role as a key defender for the Islanders.
In a touching tribute, Tiri will wear the name Rubio on his jersey in honor of his late father, showcasing his deep emotional connection to the sport and his family.
"I chose to stay because I truly feel at home in Mumbai. The club has been there for me during my toughest times, and that support means everything to me. I aim to repay that love with hard work and dedication to my teammates. My dad has always been my biggest supporter, and I want to carry his name, Rubio, to feel closer to him!" Tiri expressed.
Tiri began his football journey with Cadiz CF in Spain before moving to Atletico Madrid, where he played for their B team for three years. He made his way to India in 2015 and became the second international player to reach 150 appearances in the Indian Super League.
As Mumbai City gears up for the 2025–26 season, Tiri's contract extension is a strategic decision that brings both stability and experience to a team undergoing changes. After a tough season, the club is focused on making thoughtful choices that align with its long-term vision. Retaining Tiri, with his knowledge of the club and consistent performance, is a wise move towards rebuilding with purpose and stability.
