Earthquake Activity in Gujarat
Between Thursday night and Friday afternoon, residents of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat experienced several tremors. The intensity of these earthquakes ranged from 2.6 to 3.8 on the Richter scale, with at least 12 distinct shocks reported.
The tremors caused panic among the inhabitants of three talukas in Rajkot district, prompting many to seek refuge in open fields as a precaution. However, Om Prakash, the district collector of Rajkot, stated that 21 tremors were felt in the talukas of Upleta, Dhoraji, and Jetpur, with magnitudes varying from 1.4 to 3.8.
Officials confirmed that there have been no reports of damage to property or loss of life due to the earthquakes. The first tremor was recorded at 8:43 PM on Thursday, registering a magnitude of 3.3.
The epicenter of the earthquakes was located near the town of Upleta. According to the seismic research institute in Gandhinagar, a total of 12 tremors were documented, with intensities ranging from 2.6 to 3.8, situated approximately 27 to 30 kilometers northeast of Upleta.
Due to the series of tremors, residents of Upleta, Dhoraji, and Jetpur are living in fear. Local residents reported that after the initial shock, they rushed out of their homes, and additional tremors were felt until Friday afternoon.
The district collector of Rajkot mentioned, 'We have contacted teachers, talathis, and sarpanchs after identifying old buildings. A day off has been declared for all anganwadis and schools located in these older structures.'
