MS Dhoni's Role in IPL 2026: Ashwin Confirms His Importance for CSK
Speculation Surrounding Dhoni's Future with CSK
As IPL 2026 approaches, just two days remain, and discussions about MS Dhoni's position in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have intensified. At the age of 44, many are questioning whether this season might be his last and if he will only play as an impact player, especially with Sanju Samson joining the team.
Ashwin's Strong Defense of Dhoni's Role
Ravichandran Ashwin, a former all-rounder for CSK, has categorically rejected the notion of Dhoni serving solely as an impact player. He asserts that Dhoni's inclusion in the starting lineup is essential, given his contributions on the field and his leadership within a restructured team.
Ashwin remarked, "If he is part of the squad, he must play. If he prefers not to, then he should sit out the entire season." He highlighted Dhoni's critical role in mentoring the new bowling lineup, strategizing field placements, and assisting captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Dhoni's Commitment and Batting Strategy
According to Ashwin, Dhoni's extensive training over the past three months reflects his commitment to the game. He stated, "If you are forming a CSK XI and Dhoni is available, the discussion ends there."
Ashwin also discussed Dhoni's batting position, noting that last season's batting collapses often forced him to bat earlier than intended. However, with the addition of Samson and other young players to the top order, Ashwin anticipates that Dhoni will primarily focus on finishing the innings.
He explained, "MS prefers to play in the last three overs. Last season, he had to come up the order due to a lack of runs from the top order. This year, the team has bolstered the top order to prevent that situation." Ashwin predicts that Dhoni will bat higher in only a few matches, otherwise remaining in the later overs.
Wicketkeeping Duties and Finishing Role
Ashwin indicated that Samson is unlikely to take over wicketkeeping duties. During practice, Samson was seen fielding while Dhoni continued to keep wickets, suggesting that Dhoni will maintain his role behind the stumps, fulfilling both the wicketkeeper and finisher responsibilities.
He concluded, "I believe MS will keep wickets and likely bat at number seven. While he may not handle the middle overs, he can certainly provide finishing touches." Ashwin emphasized that Dhoni still possesses the capability to hit boundaries, even if he may not be the player he once was.
