MS Dhoni's Return to IPL 2026: Updates on His Recovery and Future Role
MS Dhoni's Ongoing Recovery from Injury
Nearly a month has passed since MS Dhoni, a key player for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has been sidelined due to a calf strain. Fans are eagerly anticipating his return to the IPL 2026, but the timeline for his comeback remains unclear.
Despite participating in practice sessions with the team before the match against the Mumbai Indians, Dhoni was not included in the playing XI, raising concerns about his fitness. He suffered the calf injury just before CSK's first match against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati and has been out of action since.
The iconic wicketkeeper-batter did not accompany the team to Guwahati and Bengaluru for their initial matches, opting to stay in Chennai for rehabilitation.
However, Dhoni did travel with the squad to Hyderabad and Mumbai, continuing his recovery while remaining part of the team.
Speculations Surrounding Dhoni's Role
With uncertainty surrounding his return, questions have arisen about whether Dhoni will serve as an impact substitute upon his comeback, especially since Sanju Samson has been fulfilling wicketkeeping duties in his absence. CSK's batting coach, Mike Hussey, has dismissed these speculations.
In a discussion on JioStar following CSK's victory over MI, Hussey expressed confidence that Dhoni would resume his role as wicketkeeper-batter when he returns, emphasizing the importance of ensuring his calf is strong enough to handle the demands of the game.
"I'm pretty sure he'll be behind the stumps. The biggest thing for him is that calf injury. It's just the running and late in the innings if he comes in, having to scamper those ones and twos. He just needs to make sure the calf is strong enough to withstand that," Hussey stated.
Dhoni's Previous Performance Amid Injuries
Last season, Dhoni played with a knee cap throughout the tournament, showcasing his ability to manage injuries while still contributing to the team. He batted lower in the order due to knee issues, scoring 196 runs at an average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 135.17 over 14 matches.
Outlook on Dhoni's Return
Hussey also provided updates on Dhoni's recovery, indicating that he is making good progress. The team is optimistic about his return in the upcoming matches, contingent on his fitness levels. Hussey emphasized the need for Dhoni to be close to 100% fit to perform at his best.
"He's progressing really well. I know he's pushing hard to get back as quickly as he possibly can. I know all the fans want to see him, MS Dhoni, out there playing as well. So we're hopeful, maybe in the next few games, but we want him back as quickly as he possibly can as well," Hussey remarked.
He added, "But obviously, he needs to be close to 100 percent ready to give his best because he's been batting well in the nets, he looks good in the nets. Just need him running hard between the wickets too."
CSK's Current Standing in IPL 2026
Following their third victory in seven matches this season, the Chennai Super Kings have climbed from the eighth position to fifth on the points table, boasting six wins and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.118, which bolsters their chances for playoff qualification.
