MS Dhoni's Absence from IPL 2026 Matches Explained by CSK Coach
Dhoni's Decision to Stay Away from Matches
On Friday, Michael Hussey, the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), clarified that MS Dhoni opted not to attend the IPL 2026 matches to avoid being a distraction for his team. Hussey mentioned that Dhoni was worried that the attention from fans, media, and cameras would divert focus from the team's performance, and he wanted the players to concentrate without any added pressure. Dhoni has not played in any matches this season due to a calf injury sustained during the pre-season camp.
Hussey addressed reporters ahead of CSK's crucial match against the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, stating, "MS Dhoni is incredibly team-focused. He always prioritizes the team's needs and was concerned that his presence might create distractions. The cameras would naturally gravitate towards him, and the crowd's cheers could shift the focus away from the team's objectives. He genuinely wanted the team to perform without any external pressures."
Update on Dhoni's Injury and Potential Return
Although Dhoni has been part of CSK since March and has participated in practice sessions and net games, he has yet to play in any official matches. Hussey provided an update on Dhoni's recovery, indicating that he is making good progress and could return soon, potentially in the next match. The primary concern remains ensuring that Dhoni's calf heals properly.
Hussey expressed confidence in Dhoni's batting and wicketkeeping abilities but emphasized that his return hinges on regaining full fitness. "We are hopeful for his swift return. I can't say if it will be tomorrow or the following match, but he is improving significantly. His running speed has increased, which was a crucial factor. We are confident in his skills, but he needs to feel secure in his calf's condition before he can play," Hussey added.
