Mother's Heartbreaking Plea to Police Amid Shimla's Drug Crisis

A Mother's Desperate Call for Help

Shimla: In a tragic incident that underscores the escalating drug problem in Himachal Pradesh, a mother in Shimla reached out to law enforcement, urging them to detain her son, fearing he might succumb to a drug overdose similar to his deceased brother.

The young man, who is battling an addiction to chitta (a synthetic narcotic), had recently been released on bail after facing charges related to drug trafficking.

In a late-night call to the Shimla Superintendent of Police around 1:30 AM, the anguished mother implored, “Sir… please take my drug-addicted son back to jail or he will die.” Her primary concern was to rescue him from the grips of addiction.

Rising Overdose Deaths in Shimla

Seven overdose fatalities have been reported in Shimla recently.

Investigations revealed that one of the two individuals apprehended with chitta had already lost his older brother to a drug overdose. Both sons, raised by their widowed mother with aspirations for a brighter future, fell into the same tragic cycle. One has died, while the other is now facing legal consequences, trapped between addiction and the law.

This heartbreaking narrative is not unique. Reports indicate that Shimla has experienced at least seven overdose deaths among its youth in recent months. Experts suggest that the actual figures could be significantly higher, as many families opt for silence due to societal stigma and fear of police involvement.

Authorities Respond to the Crisis

SSP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi acknowledged the alarming trend, stating, “Chitta is taking the lives of our youth far too soon. We encourage the community to report any information regarding drug trafficking so we can take decisive action against those responsible.”

The situation in Shimla reflects a larger epidemic affecting the region, devastating families and leaving parents feeling powerless. In some instances, even the only child in a family has died from an overdose, pushing households to the brink of despair.
