Mother Sentenced for Assisting Son in Southampton Murder Case
Mother of Convicted Murderer Receives Prison Sentence
Kiran Kaur, aged 53, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of aiding her son, Vickrum Digwa, in concealing the knife used in the murder of 18-year-old university student Henry Nowak. The sentencing took place at Southampton Crown Court, where Kaur was convicted of assisting an offender. The jury determined that she had removed the murder weapon from the crime scene and hidden it at her residence.
Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment in June, with a minimum of 21 years, for fatally stabbing Nowak with an 8-inch blade while the victim was returning home from a night out in Southampton on December 3.
Details of Kaur's Arrest
The prosecution revealed that after the murder, Digwa handed the knife to his mother, who then took it home and concealed it among over 20 ceremonial and other weapons in her son's bedroom. The police managed to recover the knife a week after the incident.
During the sentencing, Judge William Mousley KC criticized Kaur for choosing to assist her son in evading justice instead of encouraging him to take responsibility for his actions. The judge noted that hiding the knife among other weapons was a deliberate attempt to obscure its connection to the murder.
While the judge acknowledged that Kaur was unlikely to reoffend and acted out of a protective instinct for her son rather than for personal gain, he emphasized that the gravity of her actions warranted a prison sentence to deter similar behavior in others. Prosecutor Nicholas Lobbenberg characterized Kaur's actions as "criminality of the highest order," while defense attorney Mark Watson argued that her actions were a spontaneous effort to protect her child.
In the aftermath of the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service reiterated that anyone who assists murderers in evading justice will face consequences. The family of Henry Nowak expressed their profound disappointment and pledged to continue their pursuit of justice, seeking answers regarding the police's response, particularly after Nowak was handcuffed while in critical condition at the scene. Hampshire Police has since issued an apology to the family, and two officers are currently under investigation for potential gross misconduct.
