Morne Morkel Highlights Nitish Kumar Reddy's Potential Ahead of England Series

Morkel Commends Reddy's Talent but Calls for Consistency

Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for India, has expressed admiration for the young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, noting his impressive bowling skills. However, he emphasized the necessity for Reddy to enhance his consistency on the field. The 21-year-old, who scored a century during last year's Boxing Day Test against Australia, is vying for the seam-bowling all-rounder position in the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to commence later this month.

Focus on Development and Performance

During a recent training camp, Morkel commented,

“I believe he (Reddy) possesses great skill. He can deliver that exceptional ball. The key for him is to develop consistency, which is an area we aim to improve. This is crucial for his overall game.”

Despite gaining recognition as a batsman, Reddy has bowled only 26.5 overs in two unofficial Tests against the England Lions earlier this year. Morkel pointed out that this is insufficient, stating,

“I've had discussions with him where I've encouraged him to bowl more. I want to see him with the ball in hand more often. We all recognize his batting capabilities.”

Reddy's Path to Becoming a Genuine All-Rounder

Reddy faces the challenge of establishing himself as a true all-rounder in the English conditions. While Shardul Thakur, who has played 11 Test matches, brings more experience, Reddy is seen as a promising long-term prospect.

Preparing for the England Series

Morkel refrained from confirming whether Reddy or Thakur would be included in the starting XI for the first Test in Leeds. However, he stressed the significance of assembling a well-rounded bowling attack, stating,

“Regarding balance, we are quite satisfied. Yet, as a bowling unit, it is vital for us to find the right intensity needed for Test matches.”

The former South African fast bowler also discussed strategies to counter England's aggressive batting approach.

“We have extensively discussed our game plan against England. So far, our preparations are on the right track.”

With a four-day warm-up match against India A on the horizon, Morkel highlighted the importance of match fitness, saying,

“We’ve only had three training sessions thus far. The four-day warm-up game starts in two days, and I’m keen to see how our players perform in that match.”

He concluded by stressing the need for readiness, remarking,

“In England, conditions can be favorable, especially when it's overcast, but the pitches will still be good. We will be tested.”
